Speculative Future Scenario:
What if choosing between beauty obsession and natural beauty in 2101 Korea wasn't a preference, but a class you belonged to?
In 2101, South Korea's mainstream beauty ideals are represented by an endless cycle of modifications, subscriptions, and procedures designed to preserve youth.
Society is divided into two classes: the 'Colorless', who reject cosmetic enhancement, and the 'Completed', who embrace it as a lifelong obligation.
New members of the 'Colorless' embrace 'Gyeol' (결), a handcrafted decorative souvenir. Inside it is a white hibiscus flower, symbolising purity and the community's shared values, accompanied by a manifesto of belonging. Gyeol is opened each morning and closed each night as a ritual of self-worth and unaltered beauty.
By contrast, young teenagers entering the world of cosmetic surgery receive 'Neulhwa' (늘화), a skeletal vine displayed in the home as proof of compliance. After every beauty procedure, a layer of removed skin is transformed into a translucent petal and added to the structure. Over time it appears to bloom, not through life, but through repeated extraction, becoming a haunting archive of interventions where identity is accumulated as evidence of being endlessly corrected.
