Speculative Future Scenario:
What if Åland's 20,000 miniature islands became a symbolic refuge for the cultures of nations lost to climate change?
Åland is the former Finnish – though Swedish-speaking – autonomous archipelago in the Baltic Sea. For a long time, the region has been famously known for its apples and all kinds of apple products. Being resistant to many dangers of climate change, the group of 6,700 inhabitable and 20,000 even smaller islands became a cultural refuge for those nations who got lost in the 22nd century, unable to withstand rising sea levels or storm catastrophes. The Organet för Ö-konservering (OÖK), responsible for island preservation, establishes recreations of sunken countries on the archipelago's tiny islands. These heritage islands are called Hedersholmar. As a souvenir, the OÖK created 'Ådyll', a collectible series of apple-shaped globes that depict a detailed map of the Åland archipelago with all its Hedersholmar. Each 'Ådyll' piece reflects the value of cultural preservation on a smaller scale: opening the apple globe reveals translucent slices, each holding and preserving memorabilia related to one of the lost countries. A small leporello at the bottom of the souvenir package guides tourists through their trip to the Hedersholmar and helps them preserve the memories of their visit.
