Research Question:
In which ways can young adults be made aware that their self-perception is shaped by others on social media?
In which ways can today's contextual duality of historical monuments be shown without adding physical damage?
More than half the of the global population (roughly 61.4 %) uses social media to some extent; its influence is almost unavoidable. Whether active or passive social media users, everyone has received a comment at some point, but have you ever wondered how it really affects you?
The interactive installation 'Shaped By' explores 'The Looking-glass Self’ theory by sociologist Horton Cooley using a combination of analog and digital media. His theory proposes that individuals construct their self-perception based on how they believe others view them.
'Shaped By' invites people to share experiences and potentially gain a new understanding of how interactions shape our sense of self. The immersive installation consists of 3 large projections surrounding the viewer. The projection can be influenced by the audience via an interface created in p5.js.
'Shaped By' was exhibited at Berlin Design Week 2024. A revised version of the installation was presented as an interactive demo at TH/NGS24 in Amsterdam. The project also received its nomination for the UX Design Awards 2025 in the category ‘New Talent’.
